I spent large portions of today working on Braided, my lesbian version of the "Rapunzel" fairy tale, and my brain is all hair-and-trees-and-moons-and-magic-and-love-and-dreams-and-witches, so I thought it would be a VERY APPROPRIATE TIME to take a break and do something non-writey, you know, LIKE MAKING A POST. XDDDDDD
My darling T (
zeugma) gave me seven things to talk about. It works a little something like this: Comment to this post with a request, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself. A caveat--it will probably take me a wee bit of time to get that list to you, but I will. <3
Seven things!
1. Favourite music
It's no secret that my favorite musician in the entire world, that most splendid Goddess of musicality is none other than Loreena McKennitt. I cherish her music so much and so deeply, that a line from "The Mystic's Dream" is tattooed over my heart. <3
I deeply love classical music--I studied music performance (violin, piano and voice) in college, and I'm always listening to Mozart, Beethoven or Chopin at home.
I also very, very much love my sister and my friend, Bill's, effort Katana & Tonic.
I love very varied things like Frenchie and the Punk, Kid Beyond, Deva Premal, Libana, Kiva, Shakira, Madonna, almost all 70s rock, etc.
2. Favourite animals (in terms of magic/spirituality)
My totems are the wolf and the crow, the whale and the dolphin, and they are very dear to me magically, though it's very true to admit I love all animals. Horses, for example, have always factored very much into my spirituality and my magickal inclinations. <3
3. Colours!
I love colors so very, very much--though favorites? That's so hard! *laughing* A RAINBOW. ;D No, but seriously--so, my hair is pink, I wear purple or red almost constantly (though I've had to tone down on the red as sometimes it doesn't look good with pink SADNESS FOREVER--I used to wear almost strictly autumn colors, and I've had so much fun finding what looks good with pink~!). I LOVE jewel tones, and cobalt blue (I collect cobalt blue bottles), and I used to say purple is my favorite color, but now it's kind of PURPLE-PINK-FOREVER. So yeah. RAINBOW. ;D <3333
4. Your story process (I know it can differ by story, so you can answer in general or for a particular story)
I get a spark, or--depending on if it's a novel or novella--I get the entire idea downloaded into my brain. I know. I'm weird. This has been established. ;D <3 Novellas come from sparks, novels come from downloads. So Braided--the spark, obviously, is I wanted to retell "Rapunzel," and I wanted it to be lesbian and REALLY effing unique. Everyone and their brother has retold "Rapunzel," and I wanted it to be something that adds to literature, not "DEAR GODS, WHY DO PEOPLE RETELL FAIRY TALES." That's a kind of daunting prospect, so I took the bones of the fairy tale I love (and most other people recognize), and weirded them up. I write about hair in many of my stories, and I write about trees, so it was very natural to include them in this one. I GUESS THAT IS A SPOILER ALERT, BUT NOT REALLY. ;D But if it wasn't a retelling...I sit with the spark, and I build on it until I have a solid idea of beginning and end. And then I write it. Most of my stuff is very organic, but for a novella, I'll make a little list of things I want to happen in it. For a novel, I want everything I've thought of fixed, so I write down all of my ideas. It's a very organic, where-does-the-story-want-to-go while still having an idea of where I would like to drive it. You know--if the story lets me. ;D
5. What five places in the world would you like to visit?

6. Favourite geek item
Ooooh man--I can't pick one, so I'll pick a few, and only out of my Star Wars geekery (I have too many types of teh-geekeries). ;D <3 Rhi and I share aRABID LOVE obsession of Star Wars, and she's given me some preciousssssss treasures over the years, INCLUDING my Darth Vader cookie jar, and a recipe box SHE MADE HERSELF with Obi-Wan's little face on it saying "Use the fork, Luke." ;D I KIND OF LOVE IT MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF. I also have my Yoda backpack (it looks like Yoda is riding on my back YES IT IS AWESOME), and I have little red lightsaber earrings that are TOO ADORABLE FOR WORDS. BUT, probably my favorite geek item in the whole universe are my Boba Fett earrings that Rhi made for me out of tiny Boba Fett toys. <3 <3 <3 I've kind of worn them into the ground.
